The Railway and Canal (Extension of Time) Commission was a transitional body established to perform specific land-related functions under the pre-independence Defence of the Realm (Acquisition of Land) Act 1916. The establishment of a body was deemed necessary for this purpose, as the Railway and Canal Commission had ceased to have authority in Saorstát Éireann
