Board of Trade

Birth

Existed under various guises and officially known as the Board of Trade from 1861. The Board would evolve gradually into a government department with considerable power and a diverse range of functions, including regulation of domestic and foreign commerce, the development, implementation and interpretation of the Acts of Trade and Navigation, and the review and acceptance of legislation passed in the colonies. Powers conferred on the Board under certain legislation applicable to Ireland continued to apply post-independence but were effectively exercised by the Minister for Industry and Commerce. The Board's functions in Ireland are assumed to have been formally absorbed by the Department of Industry and Commerce by 1924
